If you know me in person, you probably know how much I legit love show homes. Like, Andrew will mention how I'm pretty much banned from suggesting show homes as a date night ever again because we've gone to so many of them, hahaha.
When Kaitlin told me they're excited to move into their new home and was describing their place (built by Brookfield Residential), I knew it was the Cadenza model! Three bedrooms up, large basement windows, and the laundry room upstairs by the flex room, I totally knew which one they purchased and even more excited to photograph them moving into their new home!
They've been living with Kaitlin's grandmother for the past four and half years, so all of their own stuff has been in storage until now and they were super excited to open them up (especially their plates!)! Literally within minutes after them signing the papers, we shot a few photos in their new space (and you guys, they have like, the biggest yard ever!).
Being able to photograph these first few moments for Tom & Kaitlin in their new home was such a fun experience for me. I'm excited to share them with you too, and if you're planning to move into a new home of your own too, let me know!
Your names & ages: Kaitlin (26) and Tom (28)
Occupations: Dental hygienist (Kaitlin), analyst for the Government of Alberta (Tom)
Current relationship status: Married!
How did you two meet?
We officially met at a Halloween dance. Although we had noticed each other before that! I was dressed as a blue Smurf, and Tom was an Angry Bird.
When did you start dating? Who asked who?
We started dating in November of 2011. Tom asked me out on our first date, and to be his official girlfriend :)
Describe your first date. Did you know it would lead to more dates? A relationship?
Our first date was to IHOP for a breakfast date :) Tom had asked me out for the Friday night, but I was busy, then he followed by asking me out for the Saturday night, which I also had to say no to because I was busy! So he tried one more time and asked me out to a breakfast date for the Saturday morning.
He said he "couldn't wait a whole week until the next weekend to take me out." And Tom says "I knew before our first date that we were going to be together. I knew as soon as we first met." It took me a little longer to figure it out.
Who proposed? How did it happen?
Tom proposed! We were visiting his family out of town, and Tom spent the day preparing for the proposal which I had no idea was coming! In the afternoon/evening Tom asked if I wanted to go looking for old time capsules that he had buried years before up on some hill. I thought that sounded fun so he took me for a quad ride out into the country, but it has been raining all day up until that point. So it was muddy and messy and i was dressed in sweats and a hoodie.
We had shovels and metal detectors and he drove me to the top of this really beautiful lookout point, and we began searching for these "time capsules". After about half hour of searching I wanted to give up and go home. Tom asked me to try one more area and suggested a spot to try digging. After a few shovels full, I hit something! And I began to get really excited and started digging with my hands.
I uncovered this wooden box that I promptly opened and dumped out. It was full of dirt except for a single piece of paper. I started reading it and quickly realized it wasn't a time capsule, but a beautiful love letter from Tom. When I finished reading it Tom was down on one knee and asked me to marry him! And I said yes!
Was the proposal a complete surprise? How did you celebrate after?
I was completely shocked and surprised! He didn't let any hints slip leading up to it. We celebrated by calling all our family to tell the the good news!
How did you know he/she was the one you want to marry?
We just knew :)
How do you like to spend your free time together?
We like to relax at home with our dog. Watching Netflix, YouTube. Napping. We just like being together. Even if we're do absolutely nothing. Or if we're doing to boring day-to-day errands.
Do you have any memorable moments you've shared together?
What has been the biggest struggle you've faced as a couple?
Just 6 months after being married I was diagnosed with cancer, and for the next year and a half I went through surgeries, and 13 months of chemotherapy. Bring so newly married we got to learn some much so fast, and really connect in a way that may have taken years to do otherwise. Tom took care of me through the hardest time of our lives, and we came out stronger in the end.
In a world where unfortunate circumstances & divorces occur, what makes you confident your marriage will survive its challenges?
We choose each other every single day. "Choose your love, love your choice"
What are your goals & dreams for the future?
